Le principat médiéval constitue le thème de ce livre dans lequel les auteurs ont voulu rassembler des éléments neufs sur cette question magistralement éclairée par Olivier Guillot et Karl-Ferdinand Werner (†). Le premier a montré que la royauté franque a revêtu durant le haut Moyen Âge les traits essentiels du principat romain chrétien ; le second a souligné le rôle politique que les princes ont joué à côté du roi dans le monde franc et sa périphérie du VIIe au XIIIe siècle. Ces deux savants ont ainsi ouvert une perspective de recherche centrée non plus sur la principauté mais sur le principat. Ce livre veut leur rendre hommage. Son champ chronologique va de l’époque romaine à la fin du Moyen Âge dans un espace qui couvre une large part de l’Empire romain ainsi que ses marges celtiques et scandinaves. Dans ce cadre, les auteurs ont cherché à savoir si l’institution du principat fondée par Auguste a, dans ses traits fondamentaux, traversé les siècles. Ils ont aussi posé la question de la nature du principat médiéval. Le principe antique selon lequel le gouvernement du prince doit rechercher l’utilité commune est-il admis durant l’époque médiévale ? Le prince exerce-t-il alors une puissance en imposant sa volonté ou son peuple qui lui obéit reconnaît-il son autorité comme légitime ? Quatre voies d’analyse ont été retenues : l’idéal du bon prince et des rapports de ce gouvernant aux lois ; l’exercice et la pratique du pouvoir ; la contestation par ses sujets du prince maladroit ou immoral ; enfin la diffusion du modèle romain de gouvernement qu’est le principat. L’importance politique du principat, que la recherche contemporaine tient désormais pour essentielle, justifie ce livre.

The conflicts that permeated the history of the medieval Near East, from the Crusades to the Mongol invasions, necessitated the presence of warriors at the heart of power. The Mamluks, military slaves, freed to access the title of emir, ruled Egypt and Syria, from 1250, with the title of sultan, and were among those who defended the Muslim world against the perils of time. The uniqueness of Mamluk society lies not only in the fact that former slaves, captured as children in the plains of Central Asia and in the Caucasus, became political leaders, but also that the society concerned was made up of two elite groups. complementary: on the one hand, the Mameluks, Turkish-speaking Arabic, converted to Islam, holding political power and constituting the armed forces; on the other hand, the ulemas, Arabic speakers, Muslims by birth, literati holding religious functions, those of the judiciary and the transmission of knowledge. In this lies the difficult challenge of this work: to grasp, as finely as possible, beyond the distinction and relations of domination, the modalities of this long coexistence, and to study, understand and restore the complexity of the interactions and relations that Mamluks and civil and religious elites have been able to forge among themselves. Curriculum and the Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure lays bare the untold damage done to children who are forced to endure the toxic combination of "fermented parenting" (as author Leslie Nissen has termed it) and frequent family moves at the hands of alcoholic parents who perpetually seek the elusive Geographic Cure. While such parents deceive themselves that in the next new place, sobriety will prevail, their children know better. Alcoholics who chronically uproot their families for a fresh start usually carry along every reason to drink. For the school-age children of such cure-seeking alcoholics, the torment of life with a volatile, unpredictable and chronically intoxicated parent is intensified by the anguish of being “the new kid” who changes schools at the whim of the parent. Highly mobile children, bearing an alarmingly long list of prior schools, may be part of a group which Nissen calls Geographic Cure Children, whose chances of finding help are nearly non-existent, despite their acute need for care. The dilemma of this unique subset of Children of Alcoholics is examined via autobiographical, psychoanalytic and fictional lenses. Nissen also recounts her own urge to hit the road when diagnosed with cancer, and explores the Geographic Cure writ large, observing how the current “testing frenzy” and clamor for cures for low test scores dominate educational policy. Could teachers’ panic about accountability cause them to resent new students who appear at their classroom doors mid-year? Is education encumbered because, at the hands of policy-makers, educators are working the Life Erratic?

Nous sommes à l’âge de la négociation, estimait il y a une vingtaine d’années un politiste américain, William Zartman. En France, y serions-nous parvenus ?
